Need help on track

by John Lander
(New Smyrna Beach, FL)

I am just entering the world of N gauge and would like to start with a somewhat basic and small track setup. I have reviewed some scenes/layouts, but none give specifics on how many piece of track I need; i.e. straight and length, curved and length, etc. Can anyone make recommendations to help me get started. Many thanks,

John Lander

Starting Up in N scale
by: Greg Warth

Hi John,
Welcome to the world of model railroading! You are about to start on a great adventure!
I would begin with a good starter train set with the locomotive, cars, transformer, and a simple oval track all in one kit. Once you get that set up, you can then start buying extra track pieces and turnouts to expand the layout, little by little. Also, consider using layout design software like those you can find at https://shop.atlasrr.com/t-software.aspx, or Railmodeller.com for Mac and others. (See the Model Railroad Software page on this site for more info on layout design software) Once you design your layout with one of these programs, they will be able to show you exactly how many and what kind of sections of track you need. It sounds like that might be what you are looking for. I would start out simple. You can always add to it and expand later. Start reading the pages on this site, beginning with "Getting Started" to help you through the process. Best wishes, and let us know how we can help along the way!

MRMHR

This unique Model Railroad Museum was established in November of 2024 as a non-profit community organization featuring ten operating model railroads in all the different major scales, a STEM Program for students, historical displays, group tours and clinics on how to develop your skills as a model railroader. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Open 12-6 pm on all Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through April, 2026. They will be moving to a new location after that. Will provide an update later this year.
